The house
Built in 1952. Fixed, not finished.
Saltmarsh House sits behind the second dune at St Andrews Beach, which means you can't see the water from the road and you can't not hear it from the house. Four rooms, one long kitchen, a verandah that catches the afternoon, and an outdoor shower that is the best shower you will have this year.
We fixed the roof, the wiring and the plumbing. We left the floorboards, the sash windows and the sense that someone's grandmother is about to put the kettle on.

02 · Verandah
The Verandah Room
French doors straight onto the deck. Coffee outside in a dressing gown is the whole point.

Up a ladder, under the roof, with a porthole that looks at the dune. Rain on this roof is a sleeping aid.

The days
Nothing to do. Here is how to do it.
Morning
Swim before you think about it
Down the track, over the dune, in. The back beach is cold and a bit wild and you will feel extraordinary afterwards. Then the bakery in Rye for the pies, back by nine.
Afternoon
Verandah, book, nap, repeat
The deck gets the sun from one. There are hammocks and there is no phone signal in the one at the end, which we consider a feature. Hot springs are fifteen minutes if you must leave.
Evening
Cook, or walk to dinner
The kitchen is stocked for a proper meal and the fishmonger in Sorrento will clean whatever you bring back. Otherwise the pub is twelve minutes on foot and does a very good parma.
